Why was Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakango Arrested? Public Revelations by Controller of Budget that are Linked to Her Arrest

The Office of the Controller of Budget is an independent office established by the constitution of Kenya 2010. This means that the holder of the position of the controller of budget is supposed to work independently without interference from other institutions within government. For controller of budget to be arrested, the president must be notified.

Yesterday, Kenyans were left talking after the current Controller of Budget Dr. Margaret Nyakango was dramatically arrested while at a public seminar in Mombasa. This caused outrage from Kenyans especially those in opposition. It has since been established that she might have been arrested due to her recent utterances she made accusing some government officials.

Last month, the Controller of Budget, Dr. Nyakango, revealed that the National Treasury had inflated her salary budget three times, contrary to what she is paid. She said this while appearing before the National Dialogue Committee where she also said that a similar case was with other several government officials.

According to her, the rot in the National Treasury had somehow contributed to the high cost of living in the country.

“When I was doing the budget for consolidated funds services, this is where my salary is paid from, I found out that my salary was budgeted at three times what I’m paid. I am the only state officer in my institution so there is nothing like confusion there,” she said.

“I’m all alone. So I asked them why is the budget showing three times what my annual salary was. And it was like that for all the state officers. I have not received the answer to date.”

Some times in March, she revealed how she was put under pressure to release Sh15 billion days before the 2022 General Elections. Dr. Nyakango said she was forced to release sh. 6B for purchase of Telcos and another she. 9.5B from the annuity fund some days before election. This she said while appearing before the Parliamentary Public Petitions Committee on 7th March 2023.

Politically speaking, many have claimed that it is due to her firmness and tough standing on matters of public funds that has made her now be pursued by government.
