What is Christmas and why do Christians celebrate it?

Every year, all over the world, Christian believers celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on Christmas Day, December 25th. It’s a day – and a season – filled with Christmas carols, tree decorating, gift giving and parties. And, among all the festivities, you may wonder: What is the real meaning of Christmas? Or, Why is there a Christmas tradition? What is your relationship with Jesus? Christmas is celebrated on December 25, but it wasn’t always like that.

December 25 is not the date mentioned in the Bible as the birthday of Jesus Christ. The Bible does not actually say the day or time of year when Mary (the Virgin Mary) was said to have given birth to him in the city of Bethlehem.

Who made the decision to celebrate Christmas on December 25th?

Some documents say he was a pope; but others say it is not true. However, many documents and explanations show that, the birthday of Jesus was thought of for the first time – around 200 AD and it started to be celebrated on January 6th.

By the middle of the 4th century, the celebration of the birthday of Jesus Christ was December 25. But Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas on January 7, instead of December 25, which is used by many. You can call it Orthodox Christmas.

Orthodox Christians follow a different calendar from the Gregorian calendar that is commonly used in Western countries. They celebrate Christmas on the 7th of January, with the festivities officially starting at midnight on their Christmas Eve. Julius Caesar introduced the calendar in 46BC based on the advice of the Egyptian astronomer Sosigenes, who had calculated the lunar year.

Why do Christians celebrate Christmas?

For Christians, Christmas is about the birth of the Son of God – Jesus Christ. It is about how he came to earth to give them love, hope and joy. The message does not change from year to year. What does the Bible say about the birth of Jesus Christ?

According to the book of the Bible that serves as a guide to Christianity, the angel Gabriel first appeared to a young woman named Mary. He told her that she had been chosen to be the mother of Jesus – that is, she would give birth to the Son of God.

“Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will call him Jesus,” said the angel (Gospel of Luke 1:30-31), version of the Good News Bible, then Mary became pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit and gave birth to Jesus Christ.

What does Christmas mean for Christians?

The birth of Jesus Christ is more than a Christian holiday.

It is more than an event to decorate the house and have fun with food and drinks, exchange gifts and have fun with loved ones. Christmas is considered as a memory of the love with which God loved the world and gave his only son to redeem the world.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.”, explains the Bible in his (John 3:16).

Christmas Day is an opportunity to pause and give thanks for the love, hope and joy found in Jesus

“When we exchange gifts with our loved ones, it is a reminder of the gift that God gave us in Jesus. A gift that we are loved, we are not alone and we can have hope for the future”, says one of the Christian religious leaders.

Giving Christmas gifts is also a reminder of the gifts that were given to Jesus Christ after his birth, according to the Bible. After Jesus was born, a small group of wise men visited him. They recognized the kingdom of Jesus and “bowed before him. Then they opened their treasures and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh” (Matthew 2:11).

During this period, Christians are also encouraged to worship and thank God through Christmas prayers. A prayer of thanksgiving for the gift of hope, love and joy. Many activities of visiting the sick and donating various aids such as clothing and food are witnessed more during the Christmas season as a sign of showing love to humans – the example shown by God and Jesus Christ to humans.
