Uhuru, Mama Margaret visit the Karimenu Gatundu dam

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta and his wife Mama Margaret visited Karimenu Dam in Kiambu County on Wednesday.

The pair were photographed standing side by side overlooking the pool on Wednesday. The former president and his family have stopped being known in public since he left office but they have been appearing in public from time to time.

The dam is located in Gatundu North, Kiambu County, 75 kilometers north of Nairobi. The 59 meter long dam occupies an area of 600 acres. It is one of President William Ruto’s legacy projects.

The Karimenu Dam was built for Sh24 billion, with funding from the Kenyan government and the Exim Bank of China. Construction of the dam began in April 2019, but the project stalled several times following protests by residents over unresolved compensation.

By March 15, 2022, the dam was ready for water collection. Recently, water from the dam started spilling and the government said it has allocated Sh150 million in the additional budget to compensate the residents of Gatundu North affected by the Karimenu Dam.
