The Batman is a superhero film based on the DC Comics character Batman to be released in 2022 in the United States. It is a reboot of the Batman film series, produced by DC Films, 6th & Idaho, and Dylan Clark Productions, and released by Warner Bros. Pictures. Screenwriter Peter Craig collaborated on the script with director Matt Reeves. Among the cast members are Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne / Batman and actresses Zo Kravitz and Paul Dano as well as actors Jeffrey Wright and John Turturro. On a mission to catch the Riddler (Dano), a serial murderer who attacks Gotham City’s wealthy and powerful, Batman uncovers corruption in the city’s criminal underworld.
DCEU Batman began development in 2013 when Ben Affleck was cast as Batman. While working on The Batman, Ben Affleck had doubts about the film, so he stepped out of the production. It was modified by Reeves, who removed any DCEU ties. Since Alfred Hitchcock and the New Hollywood period, as well as comics like “Year One” (1987), The Long Halloween (1996–1997), and Ego (1997–1998), he aimed to go further into Batman’s investigative side than prior films (2000). Pattinson was cast in May of 2019 and more roles will be filled up by the end of the year. Between January 2020 and March 2021, principal photography took place in the United Kingdom and Chicago.
The Batman had its global premiere on March 1, 2022, at Lincoln Center in New York City, and was distributed to theaters on March 4, 2022, worldwide. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was twice postponed from its original June 2021 release date. While some have criticized the film’s duration for being too long, the film has made over $465 million against a $185–200 million budget making it the second-highest-grossing picture of 2022. There are plans for two sequels and two spin-off television shows for HBO Max as part of a Batman-shared world.

Plot
Don Mitchell, Jr., mayor of Gotham City, was killed on Halloween by a serial murderer known as the Riddler. For the last two years, Bruce Wayne, a reclusive millionaire, has been operating as Batman, a vigilante Batman (GCPD). A note left by the Riddler for Batman is discovered by Lt. James Gordon, but Commissioner Pete Savage chastises him and orders Batman to leave. After killing Savage, The Riddler leaves Batman another note.
With the help of Batman and Commissioner Gordon, they find that the Riddler put a thumb drive with photographs of Mitchell with a lady named Annika Koslov in Mitchell’s car. Batman sees that Selina Kyle, Annika’s roommate, works as a waiter at the club, despite the Penguin’s claim of ignorance. Selina returns to the Iceberg Lounge to look for answers after Batman follows her home to interview Annika, but Annika vanishes. Batman learns through Selina that both Savage and district attorney Gil Colson worked with Falcone. When Batman questions Selina about her friendship with Falcone, she cuts off all communication.
After kidnapping Colson, the Riddler ties a timed bomb around his neck and sends him to disrupt Mitchell’s funeral. Riddler threatens to explode the explosives unless Colson answers three questions on Batman’s phone when he arrives. Despite Batman’s support, Colson refuses to reveal the final question—the identity of the informant who supplied the GCPD information that led to a historic narcotics arrest that ended gangster Salvatore Maroni’s operation—and he falls to his knees. In order to find out if the informant is in indeed the Penguin, Batman and Gordon follow him to a heroin transaction. Discover that Maroni’s enterprise has been taken over by a Falcone organization, with several GCPD personnel participating. When Selina arrives to take money, she unwittingly exposes them. Selina discovers Annika’s body in the trunk of the car as the Penguin flees. When Batman finally gets his hands on the Penguin, he discovers that he wasn’t the informant after all.
After pursuing the Riddler’s trail to an orphanage sponsored by Bruce’s slain parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne, Batman and Gordon realize that the Riddler has a personal vendetta against the Waynes. When Alfred Pennyworth opened a mail bomb sent to Bruce, he ended himself in the hospital. Thomas, who was campaigning for mayor at the time of his death, paid Falcone to assassinate a journalist who was threatening to expose embarrassing information regarding Martha’s mental condition, according to the Riddler’s findings. When Bruce, who grew up believing that his father was morally upstanding, confronts Alfred, who confirms the allegations but maintains that Thomas only asked Falcone to threaten the journalist into silence, and planned to turn Falcone over to the police once he discovered that the journalist had been murdered, Bruce is skeptical. For this reason, Alfred is convinced that Falcone ordered the assassinations of Thomas and Martha.
Since of what Mitchell told her, Selina intends to murder Falcone because she learned that Falcone strangled Annika because Falcone was the informant, and she notifies Batman. Despite Batman and Gordon’s efforts, the Riddler murders Falcone as he is taken into custody. A forensic accountant, Edward Nashton, is revealed to be the Riddler and imprisoned at Arkham State Hospital, where he bemoans his failure to kill Bruce Wayne. That Bruce is Batman, whom he idolizes and takes inspiration from when he goes after the corrupt, is something that he doesn’t know. Batman turns down Nashton’s partnership proposal. When Batman searches Nashton’s residence, he discovers that the assassination attempt on Mayor-elect Bella Reál has been planned with the use of vehicle explosives across Gotham.
The explosives detonate, destroying the city’s breakwaters and causing a flood. When Nashton’s supporters try to kill Reál in an indoor arena shelter, Batman and Selina step in to stop them. Nashton befriends another inmate,[a] while Selina decides that Gotham is beyond salvation and heads out of town. At the same time, Batman promises to bring optimism to Gotham.
Cast
In the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman, Robert Pattinson
Masked vigilante: A recluse multi-billionaire who guards Gotham City in order to deal with his painful past. Matt Reeves, the film’s director, intended to examine the character of Batman before he was “completely formed” at the age of 30. Both Reeves and Pattinson depicted Bruce Wayne as a drug-addicted insomniac who can’t tell the difference between his “recluse rockstar” public image as Batman and his “normal” character as Bruce Wayne. “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” director Robert Pattinson stated the movie will explore what it means to be heroic, given that the character of Batman is more human and less self-controllable than other superheroes. The Batman, according to Reeves, is a narrative about Batman understanding that he must not take retribution, but rather instill hope in those around him. A young Bruce is portrayed by Oscar Novak.
Catwoman, played by Zo Kravitz, is portrayed by the actress.
Batgirl’s moral complexity confronts Batman’s black-and-white concept of good against evil when she encounters him while hunting for her missing roommate in a bar. Kravitz described the role as “finding who she is, beyond simply someone trying to live” as she transforms into a femme fatale. Compared to Batman’s masculinity, she sees Catwoman as a mystery woman with ambiguous goals. She referred to them as “partners in crime” because of their shared goal to help those in need. Batman’s awakening to his own sheltered background and preconceptions was seen by Reeves as Selina’s. To avoid detracting from the character’s emotional journey, Kravitz focused more on Selina than her Catwoman identity, portraying her as bisexual, like the books.
The Riddler/Edward Nashton is played by Paul Dano.
He is a serial killer who is motivated by Batman to target the wealthy residents of Gotham and livestreams his killings. As Batman and the police are put through their paces, he tries to “unmask the truth” about Gotham. According to Reeves, the Riddler’s attack on Gotham gives him a “political goal” as a terrorist-like figure, reflecting the comic book premise that Batman makes his own adversaries. Because they are “both pursuing the same thing,” he felt that they were “sort of two sides of the same coin,” which disturbed him. He compared the Zodiac Killer, who he believed was the “real-life” Riddler due to his use of ciphers and riddles in communication, to the Riddler, saying that Dano’s acting matched the real-life foundation with the theatricality of the Batman franchise. Nashton as a child is portrayed by actor Joseph Walker.
James Gordon, played by Jeffrey Wright:

A police officer in Gotham City who works with Batman as an ally (GCPD). They work together to solve the Riddler case as the only GCPD officer Batman can rely on. According to Wright, Commissioner Gordon is “related to the Gotham City Police Department, to Batman, to justice and to corruption”. In the same vein as Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy (2005–2012), Gordon begins as a GCPD lieutenant in The Batman, allowing following films to show his rise to commissioner. In comparison to prior film incarnations, Wright believed that beginning Gordon’s story as a lieutenant allowed him to play a more significant part. Reeves likened Batman and Gordon’s cooperation in The Batman to that of Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward in All the President’s Men (Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford) (1974).
Carmine Falcone is played by John Turturro.
Selina’s father and a Gotham criminal lord. Turturro called Falcone a “dangerous character,” while Reeves called him “seemingly…a genteel gangster, but [he] turns out to have a very, very terrible past behind him” and compared him to Noah Cross (John Huston), the villain in Roman Polanski’s Chinatown (1974). Using the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne as an example, the Batman argues that he was involved in Batman’s origin narrative. Falcone’s mannerisms were developed with the help of Turturro’s son Amadeo, an editor at DC Comics, and Reeves, who was influenced by his father’s warnings about the Mafia as a boy growing up in New York City. As Turturro believed Falcone needed a “mask,” he wore antique sunglasses throughout the film.
Gotham’s district attorney Gil Colson, who Sarsgaard labeled as dishonest and “distasteful” by name.
Alfred Pennyworth, played by Andy Serkis:

When it comes to Batman’s butler and mentor, their connection is tense and they seldom talk. When asked about Alfred, Pattinson referred to him as Batman’s “sole confidant,” even if Alfred believes he has gone nuts. For the first time in the film’s history, Alfred has a military background, which is evident in the way he dresses and conducts himself. Reeves and Serkis came up with the cane and scars on Alfred’s face, respectively, to symbolize his status as a war veteran. To paraphrase Serkis, Alfred’s past as a “mentor and a teacher” rather than a “father figure” allowed him to be more of a “mentor and a teacher” for Bruce. As Reeves pointed out, Alfred was compelled to take on the role of father to Bruce despite his lack of expertise, and he feels responsible for the path that Batman has taken since becoming obsessed with Alfred’s parenting of Bruce.
Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot, played by Colin Farrell, is a penguin.
Operates the Iceberg Lounge nightclub where Selina works as Falcone’s main lieutenant. He is not yet the criminal lord represented in the comics, and he dislikes being called the Penguin. There is a “mid-level gangster person” who has “a little of theatrics to him, but you can sense that he wants more and has been misjudged” in the Penguin, according to Reeve.
