The late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga is a man who cannot be forgotten in Kenyan politics for even the next 50 years due to his immense contributions in the making of Kenyan politics. In this article, we look at some of the ten facts about Jaramogi which stands out in his life.

  1. He was born in October 1911 and died on 20th January 1994 aged 82 years
  2. He was born as Obadiah Adonijah before changing his name to Jaramogi Ajuma Oginga Odinga.
  3.  He was a polygamist with 4 wives (Mary Juma, Gaudencia Adeya, Susan Agik, and Betty Adongo) and sired 17 children with them.
  4.  He was the first Vice President in Kenya and remains the only one to resign from such a position after disagreeing with president.
  5.  He is the father of opposition politics in Kenya.
  6.  He refused to take over as president in 1963 and demanded release of Kenyatta to become the president.
  7.  Raila Odinga and Oburu Odinga are among his children.
  8.  He went to Maseno School and Alliance high school and later to Makerere University.
  9.  He was a teacher and taught at Maseno School.
  10.  He resigned as Luo Ker (council of elders’ chairman) to join politics.
