Speaking to the press on September 16, 2023, Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania, Chen Mingjian, following the opening of the 2023 Friendly Table Tennis Tournament, expressed China’s commitment to close collaboration with Tanzania in various areas for over 60 years.

Ambassador Chen emphasized that the table tennis tournament aims to further enhance the existing brotherhood and cooperation between the two nations. It also seeks to promote table tennis as a sport in Tanzania and ensure the well-being of all participants from both countries.

Furthermore, the ambassador stated that China would continue to work closely with Tanzania to explore economic, sports, and business opportunities.

On her part, the Secretary-General of the National Sports Council (BMT), Neema Msitha, highlighted the importance of sports events between two different countries, describing them as opportunities to showcase the significance of sports in society. She mentioned that the table tennis competition would bring together participants from China and Tanzania, allowing them to learn about each other’s cultures.

Msitha requested the Chinese Embassy to support the introduction of table tennis in schools so that children could learn and develop an interest in the sport, ultimately fostering young talent.

Alistidia Karaze, the Chief Tourism Officer of the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB), emphasized the longstanding economic and diplomatic ties between Tanzania and China. Through the partnership forged by this tournament, she anticipated an increase in tourist arrivals in 2023, aiming to return to pre-COVID-19 statistics.

Karaze also mentioned that in the five years leading up to the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of Chinese tourists visiting Tanzania increased from 25,444 in 2015 to 33,541 in 2019, representing a 32% growth. She elaborated on various strategies developed by the board to boost the number of Chinese tourists and investments in Tanzania.

“I would like to express my gratitude to the Chinese Embassy for their continuous cooperation in working with us to implement these strategies. Currently, our focus is on improving the services provided to Chinese tourists coming to Tanzania,” she added.
