Robert Alai is currently the member of county assembly representing Kileleshwa ward in Nairobi county. He is a vocal member of ODM party and great supporter of Raila Odinga. He has risen to be one of the most vocal and promising young politicians in Kenya.
Robert Onyango Alai was born in Nyando in Kisumu county on 11th November 1979. He was born in a polygamous family and his father was assistant education officer.
Alai started his education at Boya Primary school in Nyando and later joined Onjiko secondary school. However, he was transferred to Lela secondary in Kisumu where he sat for his KCSE in 1998. Alai then moved to Nairobi and joined African Virtual University for a degree in Information Technology.
He then got admission to Kenyatta University for further studies in Information Technology. He also attained a diploma degree in Information Management System from the Kenya School of Monetary Studies.
Alai stared off as an intern with the Telkom Kenya company and later got a job with the United Nations Mission in Congo as logistics officer. This made him move to Tanzania where he was based till 2007 when his contract ended.
His knowledge in Information technology made him be a guru in internet and social media and he made several connections via internet. He opened a company based online called Kazi Africa Limited where he connected job seekers to employers. This he later sold to a foreigner.
He then again launched My African Career which was also working in similar manner to the Kazi Africa and again he sold it.
Alai left Tanzania in 2007 and based on his career in information technology he had a popular platforms where he used to communicate an blog during the 2007 elections in Kenya. He also founded a platform called techmtaa.com and sold. Currently, he owns the Kahawatungu.com.
Alai is a family man who is married to Beverly Madowo and they have a lovely daughter named Yucabeth.
Being an internet savy and technology guru, Alai has always found himself in various controversies.
- In 2014, the then head of CID Ndegwa Muhoro ordered for his arrest after he released then president Uhuru Kenyatta’s contact details on internet.
- In 2019, Alai again was arrested for exposing gory images of police officers killed by IED bomb in Wajir and was detained for 14 days.
- In 2021, Alai allegedly engaged in a fight with controversial gospel singer Ringtone Apoko whom he hit with a rungu an the case is still on.
In 2022 elections, Alai got interested in politics and had initially planned to vie as mp in Nyando but got wind of the incumbent’s popularity so he chose to focus in Nairobi politics. He vie as MCA of Kileleshwa ward on ODM ticket and won.
Alai is estimated to be worth over ksh. 10 million in cash and assets.
