Rigathi Gachagua is the current deputy president in Kenya under the Kenya Kwanza administration led by William Ruto as the president.
Age and Early life
He was born in Hiriga village, Nyeri County, in 1965, as the eighth child of Nderi Gachagua Wangombe and Martha Kirigo. He is the younger brother of the late Nderitu Gachagua, Nyeri County’s first governor.
Education
Kabiruini Primary School was where he acquired his early education. Later, he attended Kianyaga High School for his O-Levels and A-Levels. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Literature from the University of Nairobi between 1985 and 1988. In 1990, he completed Paramilitary Training at the Administration Police Institute. Between 1999 and 2000, he attended the Kenya School of Government for an Advanced Public Administration Course.
Career
He began working as a District Officer Cadet in the President’s Office in 1990. In 1991, he was promoted to Personal Assistant to the Head of the Public Service. From 1997 to 1999, he was the District Officer in Charge of Ng’arua Division, Laikipia District.
When Uhuru Kenyatta was Minister of Local Government, he was his personal assistant. Rigathi Gachagua served as Uhuru Kenyatta’s personal assistant for four years, from 2002 to 2006. Mr Kenyatta traveled throughout the country with Mr Gachagua as a Kanu presidential contender in 2002.
Mr Gachagua served as the Mathira Constituency Member of Parliament from 2017 to 2022, when he ran for Deputy President on the UDA ticket with William Ruto.Dr. Ruto and Mr. Gachagua were elected President and Deputy President of Kenya in 2022, respectively.
Marriage and children
Rigathi is married to Dorcas Wanjiku Rigathi, a retired banker and Mathira pastor. In 1985, they met at the University of Nairobi during a joint university event attended by President Moi. Kevin and Keith, their two sons, were born in 1989.
