Super gasoline now costs Ksh.13.49 more thanks to an increase by EPRA, bringing the cost of gasoline to a record Ksh.195.53.
After the High Court invalidated the contentious Finance Act of 2023, EPRA is now proposing to raise the Value Added Tax (VAT) demand for fuel from 8% to 16%. fuel and kerosene now cost Ksh. 179.67 and Ksh. 173.44 respectively, an increase of Ksh. 12.39 for fuel and Ksh. 11.96 for kerosene.
The rise in fuel prices, which is also predicted to boost the pace of inflation, would likely result in a considerable increase in the cost of living across the country. Important industries like manufacturing, transportation, and distribution would be impacted by the increase in fuel prices. Customers must pay more than Ksh.200 per liter of gasoline in several outlying areas of the country, including Habaswein, Mandera, and Moyale, where it costs Ksh.202.90, Ksh.209.53, and Ksh.205.66, respectively.
According to a ruling by Lady Justice Mugure Thande, the Finance Act’s implementation has been postponed until the fifth of the following month, when the case is set to be heard in court. The price change by EPRA occurs right after that.
The decision was reached as a result of a challenge brought by Senator Okiya Omtatah of Busia, who contested the Finance Act of 2023 and asked that specific parts of the bill be repealed.
