Musalia Mudavadi is the Prime Cabinet Secretary, a position created by Kenya Kwanza government in 2022 after general election to accomodate him.

Musalia Mudavadi Date of Birth

Wycliffe Musalia Mudavadi was born on the 21st of September in 1960 making him about 63 years of age as of 2023. Mudavadi was born and nurtured in a Quaker Christian household. He speaks the ethnic Maragoli dialect, which is part of the large Luhya people in western Kenya. He is the only other Kenyan politician, after his late father Moses S. B. Mudavadi, who does not take oaths of office because his faith forbids it.

Mudavadi attended Nairobi Primary School, Jamhuri and Nairobi School for A-levels. He then went to the University of Nairobi. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Land Economics. He participated in sports as a winger for his high school and university’s Mean Machine RFC.

Musalia Mudavadi political career

Mudavadi became a Member of Parliament for the first time in 1989, when he was elected unopposed in a by-election to fill the Sabatia Constituency seat left vacant by his late father, Moses Mudamba Mudavadi. He went on to win the seat in the general elections in 1992 and 1997.

Mudavadi was Minister of Supplies and Marketing from 1989 to 1993, Finance from 1993 to 1997, Agriculture from 1997 to 1999, and Transport, Communications, and Information from 2000 to 2002. He has also served as Vice President in 2002 and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Local Government of the Republic of Kenya from 2008 to 2013.

Mudavadi was the running mate for KANU presidential candidate Uhuru Kenyatta in the 2002 presidential elections, and they were supported by then-President Daniel Moi, however they were defeated by the Kibaki-Wamalwa ticket. In 2007, he served as Raila Odinga’s running mate in the election that went down in history as the most violent election characterized by post-election violence. As a result, a coalition government was formed, with Mudavadi serving as Deputy Prime Minister until 2013.

Musalia Mudavadi ran for the ODM presidential candidacy in 2012. He quit ODM when a party constitution clause that provided the party leader a direct nomination as presidential candidate effectively kept him out of the nomination campaign. He then took over the United Democratic Front (UDF) and became its presidential candidate.

He joined Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto to establish the Jubilee Coalition, which brought together the UDF, URP, and TNA parties. However, Mudavadi abandoned the alliance due to a violation of contract, which specified that Uhuru Kenyatta would step down in his place as the UDF/TNA/URP Jubilee coalition’s presidential flag-bearer. Mudavadi ran alone on UDF and finished third in the contest for the country’s top leadership in that election.

After the 2013 elections, UDF party got disrupted and Mudavadi abandoned it and formed the Amani National Congress, which he moved with to the 2017 general elections and joined Raila Odingas team. Mudavadi refused to be part of the Railas swearing in ceremony terming it unlawful. He assumed the role of official opposition after Raila – Uhuru handshake in March 9 2018.

Mudavadi made a surprise move together with Wetangula after they abandoned the One Kenya Alliance made up of Kalonzo, Gideon Moi and them to support William Ruto in 2022 elections leading to his appointment as the Prime Cabinet secretary.

Mudavadi is married to Tessie Mudavadi, and they have three children: Moses, Michael, and Maryanne. Mudavadi supports Manchester United of the English Premier League and AFC Leopards of Kenya’s Premier League. He was originally a supporter of the AFC Leopards. He also enjoys golf and rugby. Musalia Mudavadi: Soaring Above the Storms of Passion, his autobiography, was released in 2019. Mdvd, aka Earthquake, is his political alias in Kenya. Mudavadi is also a big lover of old-school country music, especially Kenny Rodgers and Dolly Parton.
