Michael Olunga was born on 26th  March 1994. He is a Kenyan professional footballer who plays a forward/ striker.

Early Life

Michael Olunga was born on March 26, 1994, in Kenya. Olunga was born to father, Joseph Ogada Olunga, and mother, Alice Ogada, and grew up with his brother, Victor Ogada.

Michael Olunga enrolled at Babadogo Primary School. He is an undergraduate student at the Technical University of Kenya, where he studied geospatial engineering.

Club Career

Michael Olunga began his football career with the Liberty Sports Academy in the Nairobi County League. In 2012, he scored 32 goals for the club. He gave continuity to the team for four years and left the club.

After that, Michael Olunga singed a contract with Tusker for Premier League for a year deal from Liberty on December 19, 2012. Similarly, for Tusker F.C., he scored two goals in the 2013 season.

Further, his team won the Kenyan Super Cup in 2013 and KPL Top 8 Cup in the same year. Following this, Michael Olunga signed for the Premier League with the Thika United in a loan for a year.

After that, Michael Olunga joined the Kenyan professional football club “Gor Mahia” in 2015. Olunga appeared in 27 games, where he scored nine goals. He won Kenyan Premier League in 2014, 2015, Kenyan Super Cup in 2015, and KPL Top 8 Cup in 2015.

Moreover, Michael Olunga joined Djurgarden IF on February 17, 2016. Following this, he was also honored with a man of the match. After a year, Olunga contracted with the Chinese Club, “Guizhou Zhicheng,” where he played seven games with two goals.

As of 2017, Olunga loaned La Liga side Girona FC for a year. From his football career, he won the KPL Player of the Year in 2015.

Michael Olunga made his international football debut on March 28, 2015, with the Kenyan national football team at the Stade Linite, in a friendly match with Seychelles. As of now, Olunga played 26 games for the national football team and scored twelve goals.

Michael Olunga is unmarried till this date; however, Olunga is in a relationship with his girlfriend, Grace. The couple is together for a long time, but they didn’t have any child.

In primary school, he played a little bit of football and also in high school. He scooped the Nairobi County Schools’ Association MVP award for finishing top scorer at the event and his overall outstanding football skills and technique.

His professional career began in 2013 when he played for Tusker FC during the 2013 Kenyan Premier League under 19 tournament. He graduated to  Thika’s senior team and was later loaned to Thika United in 2014, where he secured a transfer to Gor Mahia FC (for Ksh200, 000).

He scored 32 goals for the side during the 2012 season, helping them finish the season unbeaten and earn promotion to the Nairobi Provincial League., he hit the headline once when he scored seven goals in a single match helping his team to an 8-0 win Initially reported to be attending trials in France, Olunga signed for Premier League side Tusker on a one-year loan deal from Liberty on 19 December 2012.

After finishing the 2013 season with two goals for Tusker, Olunga was loaned to fellow Premier League side Thika United for another year, before joining Gor Mahia before the beginning of the 2015 season. Olunga finished the season as the club’s top scorer in league with 19 goals to help the side win a record 15th league title without losing a single match, including the second goal in a 2–0 win over Muhoroni Youth on their final league match of the season.

On 17 February 2016, Olunga joined Swedish side Djurgårdens IF on a four-year contract, after joining the team’s pre-season training camp on trial. Olunga scored both his first and second goals for Djurgården on 8 August 2016 against IFK Göteborg in av 3-1 win., He was also named man of the match[11], and Djurgården coach Mark Dempsey praised him for his game-winning heroics. In the next game, Olunga scored once again in the 2-2 draw versus IF Elfsborg at the Tele2 Arena. On August 27th Olunga scored the match-winning goal against Gefle after a stunning volley in the 86th minute. On the last 12 games of the Allsvenskan, Olunga scored 12 goals, which earned him a fifth place in the Allsvenskan top scorer table. Michael was nominated for Newcomer of the year in Swedish football by a jury of Allsvenskan coaches and Swedish journalists as well as the coaches of the Swedish national teams. The prize later went to Alexander Isak.

On 10 November 2016, Kenyan football site Soka reported that Djurgården had turned down offers on Olunga from La Liga side Betis, Lokeren, Belgium champions Club Brugge, and Swedish champions Malmö FF. On 12 January 2017, Turkish reports suggested that Turkish giant Galatasaray was keeping Olunga under a close watch. Olunga was described as a potential replacement of German striker Lukas Podolski.

Olunga Scores 7 Goals for Kashiwa Reysol

Michael Olunga was on fire, scoring a whopping seven goals as Kashiwa Reysol humbled Kyoto Sanga 13-1 in the Japanese second division league on Sunday.

The Harambee Stars forward finished the season with 26 goals, two less than Brazilian Leonardo Nascimento of Niigata.

Kashiwa ended the season first, a year after being relegated, confirming their topflight status next season.
