Safaricom’s founding CEO Michael Joseph has resigned from his role as the director with effect from August 1 2023.
In a communication by the telecommunication’s secretary, the telecom said that Joseph was taking a step back to concentrate on various roles which include chairman of Kenya Airways. Joseph will also continue to pursue his passion in conservation and community service matters.
In a statement, the board revealed that,
“Michael leaves the Board to focus on other ventures in his life including continuing his role as Chairman of Kenya Airways and being a director in various organizations. He will continue to pursue his passions in matters of conservation and community service,”
Michael has served in different capacities since 2000. He has served as the chairman and director of the board. He has also served as the general manager and twice as the CEO of the board. Joseph has also served as a chairman and member of various committees of the board.
Safaricom secretary Kathryne Maundu said, ” Notably, Michael was the founding CEO of Safaricom, steering the company from a subscriber base of less than 18,000 in 2000 to over 17 million subscribers by his time of retirement in November 2010.It is the deep foundation and connection with communities that Michael developed that led to the phenomenal growth, development of innovative products and services, ensuring the company become deeply embedded in every bit of our society, he oversaw launch and growth of M-Pesa and its related services,”
Earlier this year, John Ngumi , Safaricom Board chairman also tendered a resignation six months after he was appointed last year. Ngumi left the board so as to focus on other things and focus on developing green energy generation emphasising on green hydrogen.
