EPRA is a shorthand for the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority. This body is mandated to regulate the energy and petroleum businesses in Kenya and among the many roles is designing and controlling the price of fuel products in the country. Other than fuel, EPRA also engages in electricity billing in Kenya.
The body; EPRA, is being led by a board of directors headed by a Director General. Currently, the Director General of EPRA is a man named Daniel Kiptoo Bargoria. Daniel has a profession in energy despite being a lawyer by training. He is energy specialist just by trade which earned him vast knowledge in electricity and petroleum. He focused on policy formulation, regulation, negotiations legislative drafting and structured financing.
Daniel Kiptoo took over the role on 14th, December 2020. His roles here includes regulation of the whole value chain in electricity, spanning from generation, transmission, distribution and retail. He was previously working a s a legal advisor in the ministry of Energy and petroleum and during that time, he was the chairman of First Oil Committee, a government committee charged with delivering first oil for Kenya.
Daniel holds Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in Energy and Sustainability from the University of Cumbria, UK and a Master of Laws (LLM) in Petroleum Law and Policy from University of Dundee also in the United Kingdom, a bachelor’s degree in law (LLB) from the University of Nairobi and a Post Graduate Diploma (Dip.) from the Kenya School of Law.
