Mark Angel (born 27 May 1991) is a Nigerian comedian and video producer, best known for the Mark Angel Comedy series of shorts, often featuring child comedians such as his niece, Emmanuella Samuel, and her sister, “Aunty” Success Madubuike. Mark’s YouTube channel was the first African comedy channel to reach one million subscribers.
Mark Angel Comedy
Angel is best known for Mark Angel Comedy, a series of YouTube comedy shorts that feature a number of people from Angel’s family and neighborhood in Port Harcourt. Many of the shorts involve clever children, primarily Emmanuella Samuel and Success. Angel’s first well known short is “Oga Landlord,” wherein a man late on rent (Angel) is trying to hide from his landlord (Daddy Humble), and tries in vain to have a child (Emmanuella) cover for him (e.g. “My uncle is not around. He just told me.”).
Samuel is Angel’s longest-appearing actress. She has won comedy awards in Nigeria and Australia for her work with Angel and is Africa’s youngest YouTube award winner. She started film work in school as part of a class video project, prior to being chosen by Angel for his stable of actors. Samuel’s videos can reach up to a million views during the first week after posting.
Mark Angel Comedy received a plaque from YouTube for having reached one million subscriptions in 2017. It was the first Nigerian-based YouTube channel to reach that threshold.
In 2018 it was announced that Samuel would be attached to an upcoming Disney feature film.
In 2008, he got admission to Obafemi Awolowo University. Unfortunately the sudden death of his uncle and, and as a consequence, financial issues made him leave the idea of studying medicine. Who knows was it failure or luck!
Mark Angel Early career
In 2011, destiny led him to Lagos, where he started photography for some time. Later he left for India to study cinematography and comedy production. There he joined the theatre Gingertainment as a comic and dramatic actor. After the return to Nigeria, he took several unsuccessful attempts of co-work within the Nollywood industry. Despite ups and downs, Angel’s mother always gives support to her son. She is the first spectator and critic of his satirical sketches. Mark Angel says his mother to have more of a comedian than he does.
Emmanuella and Mark Angel
Have you seen that little beauty standing right beside Mark Angel at his photos? Is she his daughter or, more likely, a niece? What if she is a rising star discovered by the celebrity trainer? The truth is rather simple. The girl is his niece. Her name is Emmanuella Samuel. When she was a toddler, Mark Angel noticed that she possessed the talent to act. She lives together with Mark Angel’s family and participates in his skits. In 2014, she took part in “Oga Landlord”, which brought fame and popularity to both of them as well as many Nigerian and International awards.
The first great business
In 2012, together with his friend, Dennison Igwe Mark Angel started his own media company due to the immaturity of the movie industry in Nigeria. Their business saw the world officially in 2013. The friends called the company Mechanic Pictures. The main task of this establishment was to create photos and videos for skits running regularly on YouTube.
Mark moved to Lagos in 2011 to pursue a career as a photographer. However, his professional journey began after a brief stint with photography. During his cinematography assignments in India, He performed stage dramas, especially comedy, with a theater group called ‘Gingertainment.’
Upon his return, Mark and his friend Dennison Igwe ventured into Nollywood and worked under a couple of productions. Together, they made a few films. Unfortunately, they had to quit the industry because of Mark’s mother, an evangelist. She was not happy with the kind of movies they had edited. Around the time, Mark worked as a security guard to ensure a regular flow of income.
On Dennison’s suggestion, Mark decided to start a media company. All of the comedy skits they had produced earlier, which they even posted on the internet, failed to impress the audience. Mark and Dennison thought of starting a production house so that they would have full control over everything. For about a year, the two planned everything to start the production, and in 2013, they finally launched their company, ‘Mechanic Pictures.’ The production house aimed at creating photos and videos for skits, sharing them through ‘YouTube.’
Mark launched his ‘YouTube’ channel, ‘MarkAngelComedy,’ on June 29, 2013. His craft caught the attention of people with the short titled ‘Oga Landlord.’ The channel currently has over 4.4 million subscribers. In 2017, ‘MarkAngelComedy’ acquired one million subscriptions, making it the first Nigerian ‘YouTube’ channel to reach those statistics. Of Mark’s other social media pages, the most notable is ‘Instagram,’ where his posts have earned him over one million followers.
Mark’s niece, Emmanuella Samuel, has been the longest-appearing actor on his comedy skits. The award-winning actor is Africa’s youngest ‘YouTube’ award winner. Mark spotted her talent while Emmanuella was on a family holiday. Mark was searching for some child actors and thus turned to her. She proved her brilliance in an 18-hour-long video shoot. However, it was just a stunt that Mark had pulled to test the endurance of the little actor. Mark then convinced Emmanuella’s parents to let her become part of his channel.
