Kenya is recognized as the home of long distance runners who have always dominated athletic world. These athletes who are mainly from a single tribe; Kalenjin, have made Kenya be ranked high in the world athletic ranking.
However, there is something quite shocking about these athletes. Apart from the fact that they come from a single tribe, they have also been involved in accidents which have taken away some lives while others survived.
Here is a list of athletes who have been involved in accident in Kenya ;
- David Rudisha
In 2019, David Rudisha who was a two times back-to-back Olympic champion in 100m got involved in a road accident along Keroka-Sotik road.
His Landcruiser V8 was badly damaged but he luckily survived the and was treated at Keroka Subcounty hospital.
- Julius Yego
Julius Yego was a Javelin champion who brought a lot of glory to Kenya. In October 2016, Julius Yego got involved in an accident along Kapsoya road where his Toyota Prado 4×4 got seriously damaged. He escaped with minor injuries and was treated at Eldoret Mediheal Hospital.
- Asbel Kiprop
Asbel Kiprop was the 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist and was also 2011 & 2013 world champion in 1500m. In November 2013, he got into an accident when he was driving to Iten where he lost control of his car and was about to fall off a cliff but was lucky that a rock under his car prevented it from falling. His BMW X6 was damaged.
- Nicholas Bett
In 2018, Nicholas Bett was involved in an accident along Kapsabet – Ainabkoi Highway which left him dead and his Toyota Prado damaged. He was the first Kenyan to win a short-distance gold medal.
- Kelvin Kiptum
On 12th February 2024, Kelvin Kiptum lost his life as his Toyota Premio got damaged after a road accident at Kaptagat. The world marathon record holder’s car veered off the road, hit a big tree before landing in a ditch.
