There are over 32 public universities in Kenya. These universities are spread across the country almost in every county, however, there are some counties without a single university. The universities are ranked in terms of infrastructure, research, services and general performance of the institution.
1. The University of Nairobi
This is among the oldest universities in Kenya. It was established in 1970 and offers more than 900 courses. Most Kenyans in public service and other senior offices have their education roots in UoN. It has over six collages in their seven campuses within Nairobi and its environs.
UoN is ranked among the best in East Africa and is position 1425 in the world according to Center for World University Rankings (CWUR). Famous courses are Law and Medicine.
2. Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, JKUAT
This is a university that is agriculture and technology oriented. This makes it the most ice for engineering courses and they have overtime proved to be a center for research. It is located in Juja with several campuses in the country.
3. Kenyatta University
KU as many calls it was founded in 1985. It is situated along the Thika Superhighway. KU is a great institution that has produced doctors, professors and philosophers in various fields. They are research oriented and famous for medicine course and law.
4. Egerton University
This is the only university that begun as an agricultural institution and grew over time to become the leading agricultural university in Kenya. It was started in 1939. They adopted other courses such as computer science and other applied sciences. Its main campus is in Nakuru.
5. Moi University
Located in Kabarnet Eldoret, the institution has produced very competent workforce in Kenya making it one of the recognized institutions of higher learning in Kenya. It has other campuses and branches across the country.
6. Maseno university.
It is found in Kisumu county in the Nyanza region. It offers vast choices of courses such as education and arts courses. It started in 1991 through an Act of Parliament.
7. Multi Media University.
It is mostly famous for their over 100 hectares of land area. This university is found along the Magadi road just a kilometer from Ongata Rongai. It offers best technical courses in Kenya such as engineering.
8. Masinde Muliro university
Was initially known as Western College of Science and Technology. It was given a charter in 2007 by the then president Mwai Kibaki. MMUST started as a constituent collage of Moi university and is located in Kakamega. It specializes in Science and Technology but also offers education and arts.
9. Technical University of Kenya.
This was initially known as Kenya Polytechnic. It was chartered to a university in 2012. Main campus is in Nairobi CBD and offers engineering and architectural courses.
10. University of Embu
It was chartered in 2011 and it is locate in Embu county. This is among the best managed universities in Kenya leading to its fast rise on rank.
