List of 9 Kenyan Universities Featured in Top 100 Best Universities in Africa


A recent survey done to determine the best universities within the African continent saw Kenya produce nine universities in the top 100.

As is expected, the University of Nairobi still dominated others in Kenya by coming at position six in the continent. The full list according to UniRanks is as follows;

  1. University of Nairobi – number 6 in Africa
  2. Kenyatta University – number 28 in Africa
  3. Strathmore University – number 42 in Africa
  4. JKUAT – number 49 in Africa
  5. MKU – number 51 in Africa
  6. USIU – number 65
  7. Egerton University – number 81 in Africa
  8. Moi University – number 82 in Africa
  9.  Methodist University –

The ranking is based on major factors such as research, knowledge transfer, international outlook and teaching. South Africa dominated the continental share by producing 19 universities in top 100. Out of these, seven are in top ten.

University of Cape Town came at the top position, followed by the University of Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria and Stellenbosch University all from South Africa.

The University of Cairo from Egypt was placed 5th overall, a slot ahead of the University of Nairobi. Egypt has 15 universities among the top charts, as Nigeria and Algeria produced 10 universities each at the top.

The University of Nairobi is ranked in position 924 worldwide while South Africa’s University of Cape Town takes position 236. United States’ Harvard University has remained at the top for six years consecutively
