Kenya Railways just announced that they’re raising the prices for all train services! Why are they doing this? Well, it’s because the cost of fuel has gone up, and that affects how much it costs for them to run the trains.
So, let’s talk about the new prices. If you’re traveling in first class from Nairobi to Mombasa, you used to pay around Ksh3,000, but now it’s going up to Ksh4,500. That’s quite a jump! And if you’re in economy class, you’ll have to pay an extra Ksh500, making it Ksh1,500 in total.
But wait, there’s more! If you’re going from Nairobi to Suswa, the price is going up too. It used to be Ksh200, but now it’s Ksh250. So, keep that in mind if you’re planning a trip.
The new prices will start on January 1, 2024. But don’t worry if you already bought your ticket in advance for the Madaraka Express Passenger Service. They’ll adjust the price for you, taking into account the 60-day ticket purchasing window.
Here’s some good news for parents. If you’re traveling with kids between 3 and 11 years old, you only have to pay half of the fare for them. That’s a nice discount! But if your kids are over 11, they’ll have to pay the full fare. And if they’re 3 years old or younger, they don’t have to pay anything at all.
I know this increase in prices might be tough for some people, especially with the high cost of fuel and other things in Kenya right now. But hopefully, things will get better soon.
