The three people accused of planning and executing the inhumane act of torturing and gouging out the eyes of Baby Sagini have been finally sentenced by a court of law to various years in prison.
The three, Alex Maina Ochogo, Pacificah Nyakerario and Rael Mayieka were fiven 40, 10 and 5 years in jail, respectively for gouging the eyes of Baby Brighton Sagini on December 13th 2022. Kisii Senior Resident Magistrate Christine Ogweno read out the sentences after carefully listening to the evidences presented before the court and handed the main suspect Maina, 27, a 40-year jail term, Maina’s mother Pacificah, 51, ten years in jail and his grandmother, Rael, 5 years sentence.
The judge argued that Maina, who is the main suspect and had dropped out of school at class two, would face a serious hostilities from Ikuruma village if he would be given a leniet terms. On the same note, it was established that the community was also angered by Pacificah, who is a class tyre dropout with ten children for killing her husband. However, she noted that the local community was a bit sympathetic towards Rael for taking care of baby Sagini and his sister, Shantel Kemunto before the inhumane act.
“They used a dangerous weapon to injure Sagini who was vulnerable and at a tender age without provocation and the sister saw. They were family members who were supposed to care for him,” the Magistrate said.
