Jeff Mwaura Koinange was born on 7th January in 1966 in Banana, Kiambu county. He is a Kikuyu by tribe. He is the son to Frederick Mbiyu Koinange and Hilda Wambui Ngoima. His siblings include Freddie Koinange, Phyllis Wangui and Hilda Wanjiru. Jeff is a grandson to legendary chief Mbiyu Koinange.
Jeff Koinange education
Jeff started school in 1972 when he joined Hospital school in parkland. After just three years, he left Hospital School and joined St. Mary’s school where he did his A level in 1984.
Going by his wealthy background, having come from the lineage of a rich and famous colonial chief, Jeff had the chance to attend some of the best schools in Kenya and abroad. He was enrolled at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, New York, USA, where he studied Broadcast Technology and Management. Here, he performed well and graduated top of his class, which gave him the opportunity to get a scholarship to study at the New York University. He graduated with a bachelor of Arts Degree in Broadcast Journalism in 1991.

Jeff got employed as a flight attendant with the Pan AM World Airways in 1986 just after he finished school at St. Mary’s school. His job here made him realize his talent in communication which formed his career path to media and journalism. The passengers got impressed with his deep and sweet voice coupled with his eloquence. This made him quit the job after one and a half years to join journalism classes in Kingsborough and later New York University.
Jeeff Koinange Joined KTN as a part time news anchor in 1995, at the same time he was a Reuters Correspondent in Nairobi. He caused a lot of debates while working for KTN with his American accent which angered some while pleased others. He, in 1998, was appointed Reuters West Africa Bureau Chief based in Ivory Coast but he moved to Johannesburg, South Africa.
His breakthrough was in July 2001 when CNN was looking for a bureau chief for their office in Lagos, Nigeria. Jeff grabbed the chance and worked for CNN in Lagos and Johannesburg, South Africa for six years until May 2007. He then joined K24 in November 2007 to December 2012, where he hosted the show called ‘On the Bench’. Jeff is now hosting talk show, Jeff Koinange Live in Citizen TV, and a breakfast show on HOT 96. Jeff was also one of the judges in East Africa’s Got Talent.

Jeff first got married to Sonya, who was Panamanian lady, back in 1988 but they separated after six years due to undisclosed reasons. He then married Shaila, a Kenyan of Asian origin lady in 1998 and they have a son by the name Jamal Mbiyu Koinange.
