James Mwangi was born in the year 1962 in Kangema, Muranga county. The exact date of birth is not in the records yet. His father was killed in the Mau Mau conflict, leaving his six siblings to be raised by their widowed mother, Grace Wairimu.

He went to Nyagatugu Primary School in Kangema Village before transferring to Ichagaki Secondary School on a government scholarship. Mwangi started his banking career as an auditor at Price Waterhouse. He then moved on to Ernst and Young, where he worked for three years until joining Trade Bank. In 1991, he left Trade Bank at the invitation of the then-senior executives of Equity Building Society (EBS), the forerunner to Equity Bank, to steer the financial institution out of insolvency. Mwangi began his career at Equity Building Society as the Finance and Operations Director, a post he held until 2004, when he was promoted to CEO. In 1993, the Central Bank of Kenya declared Equity insolvent at rank 66 out of 66. Mwangi was appointed Director of Strategy and Finance and immediately began retraining personnel to focus on customer service.
He also gives guest lectures at Stanford University, Columbia University, MIT, Harvard University, IESE Business School, and Lagos Business School.
Mwangi has also served on the boards and advisory councils of VISA Inc., MasterCard, the Clinton Global Initiative, the G8 New Alliance For Food Security And Nutrition, President Barack Obama’s Initiative for Global Development, the G20 Advisory Board of Agriculture and the Initiative for Global Development, and the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on New Economic Thinking.
From 2003 to 2007, Mwangi was a member of the technical team that developed Kenya’s Vision 2030, and from 2007 to 2019, he chaired the Vision 2030 Delivery Board. Kenya’s GDP increased tenfold during this time span, from $10 billion to $100 billion.
