The tyranny of controlling Mount Kenya politics has increased following some Kenyan leaders calling for Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro to run for president in the 2032 General Election.
The leaders have asked Nyoro to take over the leadership of the nation after President William Ruto completes his tenure saying he has the experience to lead the country. The leaders said Mr Nyoro has met all the criteria to be president while Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu insisted that the time has come for the region to have a president.
Those statements are expected to spark debate and further division in the central region where Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is considered to be President Ruto’s successor due to the important position he holds in the government.
The Mlimani region was left without an influential figure following the retirement of President Uhuru Kenyatta after the 2022 elections. Mr Gachagua has been planning strategies to emerge as the big man of Mlimani, a position that is also being swallowed by ministers Kithure Kindiki (Internal Security) and Moses Kuria (Public Service) among others.
The leaders including Member of Parliament for Mathioya Edwin Mugo, Wilson Sossion, Didmus Barasa (Kimilili) Muchangi Karemba (Runyenjes) Paul Biengo (Chesumei) Fred Ikana (Shinyalu), Jose Kiptoo (Emgwen) who attended the launch of the Kiharu Masomo Better project, they said Mr Nyoro is good enough for the presidency and that he should be given a chance.
The political leaders said Mr Nyoro has been participating in many activities to unite leaders. Gatundu South Member of Parliament Njoroge Kururia said there was no chance of contesting in the Central region because “he crowned Mr Nyoro as the head of the region”.
“No other leader can take us forward, only Ndindi Nyoro. He has all the criteria to be president and when Kiharu residents need our support, we will be here to support him,” he said.
Mr Mugo also described Mr Nyoro as a visionary leader, comparing him to the fighter for democracy and the multi-party system, Kenneth Matiba, saying that he had the ability to take the country to greater success. He said that Mr Nyoro is also the chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on the Budget and that he has shown great skill in managing resources referring to the projects he implemented in the area.
“This is our Matiba and we believe that he can achieve what [Matiba] could not achieve,” said Mr Mugo. And Mr Nyutu said that Mr Nyoro is a close companion of President Ruto and that he was learning a lot from the country’s leader and thus he is good enough to inherit the presidency.
And in what can be interpreted as a dig at Mr Gachagua, Mr Nyutu said the member of parliament is easy to establish friendships and that he is ready to work with other leaders, something he said is very important for a national leader.
“We have faith in your leadership and your ability to take us forward. You have what it takes to lead this nation and we have no doubt that you will take us higher,” said Mr Nyutu. Murang’a Female Representative Betty Maina also said that Mr Nyoro has made great progress as a Member of Parliament and that it is time for him to do the same nationally.
“We want you to be up there. We want you to be the President. We pray for God to take you up until your enemies are surprised. Don’t listen to the noise of your critics and those who don’t believe in your abilities because when your star starts to shine, you will find many enemies,” he said asking him to stay strong.
