How to Register for NHIF in Kenya Updated procedure

We are going to show you how to register for NHIF cover both offline and online. A person who is a resident in Kenya and has attained the age of 18 years, whose total income from salaries or self-employment is more than Ksh 1000 per month and Ksh 12,000 per year, is eligible for registration/membership with NHIF Kenya. This includes foreign visitors permitted to work in Kenya.

NHIF registers all eligible members from both the formal and informal sector. For those in the legal industry, it is compulsory to be a member. For those in the informal sector and retirees, membership is open and voluntary. To register with NHIF as a member, fill in the Members Form. To register as an employer or organized group, fill in the Employers Form. You can always check the NHIF Rates to know precisely the amount you are required to contribute monthly.

Requirements for NHIF Registration

  • A copy of National ID (including spouse if applicable).
  • Recent coloured passport size photos (including spouse & dependents if applicable).
  • Original & copies of Birth Certificate(s) for dependents
  • A copy of Employer Appointment/Introduction Letter (this excludes self-employed/voluntary contributors).

The requirement for Foreign Residents

  • Photocopies of passport, alien certificate or work permit (including spouse if applicable).
  • Colored passport photo (including spouse & dependents if applicable).

Registration Requirement for Foreign Students.

  • Photocopy of passport.
  • Colored passport size photo.

Download and fill in the membership forms from the official NHIF Kenya website, then submit the above documents and the required amount under the Voluntary/Self Employed Category at any of NHIF branches located countrywide.

NHIF Online Registration Procedure

To register for NHIF Kenya online, visit http://www.nhif.or.ke/healthinsurance/registeronline on your computer.

For Self Registration

  • Visit the NHIF Kenya Portal online
  • Click on the “Self Employed” tab on the Menu provided
  • Select your identification type, i.e., Kenyan or alien identity card
  • Proceed to fill in the form in the following fields.
  • Attach a Scanned Copy of Your ID/PassPort/Alien ID and passport photo
  • If married, attach Your Marriage Certificate.
  • Click Save to apply.

Note: The system will notify you of your application status by sending a notification SMS message to the Contributor’s Mobile Number. You can also check your NHIF Balance on the phone anytime.

How to include your spouse and children in your NHIF card

You can add your spouse and children in your NHIF card by just visiting any of the NHIF branch offices or Huduma Kenya Center near you.

Documents required to include your spouse and children in your NHIF card

  1.  A photocopy of your ID and that of your spouse.
  2. A copy of your marriage certificate or an affidavit from the magistrates’ court in case you do not have a certificate.
  3. Copies of your children’s birth certificates or birth notification, if they are between 0-6 months. And finally, remember to attach color passport size photos of all dependants.

NHIF payment via MPESA Paybill procedure

Before we get into the method of making NHIF payments via MPESA here are some few things you may need to know;

  • You can manage your NHIF account from the comfort of your phone. Dial short code *263# and get started.
  • You can  make your NHIF payments at any KCB, NBK, Equity, and Co-op bank branches countrywide
  • You can take charge of your NHIF account via mobile by downloading the NHIF Wallet app here

How to make payments to your NHIF account via MPESA Pay Bill

  1. Select Pay Bill option
  2. Enter Business no. 200222
  3. Enter a/c no (Type in contributor’s National Identity card Number)
  4. Enter amount Type in the amount you wish to contribute
  5.  Enter pin Type in your M-Pesa Pin
  6. Confirm all details are correct then press OK
  7. You will receive a confirmation SMS from Mpesa immediately.

How to make payments to your NHIF account via MPESA Pay Bill

  1. Select Pay Bill option

  4. Enter amount Type in the amount you wish to contribute

How to reactivate your NHIF Account

To reactivate your account, pay Ksh 1,500 via M-PESA Paybill number 200222 using your National ID as the account number. Your card will, however, be restricted for two months before you can access the benefit.

Upon admission in a hospital, an NHIF member is accorded services, and the hospital makes a claim to the Fund for reimbursement.

  1. An in-patient cover for the contributor declared spouse and children
    Provides comprehensive medical protection in the majority of over 400 accredited Government facilities, Mission health providers and some private health providers across the country
    Provides in-patient services in private and high-cost hospitals on a co-payment basis
    Comprehensive maternity and CS (Caesarian) package in government hospitals, majority of mission and some private hospitals
  2. Dialysis at Ksh 2,500 per session at the following medical facilities:-
    – Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi
    – Moi Teaching & Referral Hospital, Eldoret
    – Provincial General Hospital Kisumu
    – Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital, Nakuru
    – Coast General Hospital, Mombasa
    – Siloam Hospital, Kericho
    – Mediheal Hospital & Fertility Centre
    – Muranga District Hospital, Muranga
    – Thika Level 5 Hospital, Thika
    – P.C.E.A Hospital, Kikuyu
    – Consolata Hospital, Nyeri
    – Tawfiq Hospital, Malindi
    – Africare Limited
    – Kakamega Country General Hospital
  3. Family planning’ Vasectomy and Tubal Ligation
  4. NHIF does not exclude any disease.
