Police in Tana River county are holding two suspects for allegedly selling sand packed in wheat flour packets to customers.
Businesswoman Mrs. Fatuma Issa and her assistant Tony Molaya were arrested on Saturday in the Adere area after investigations led police officers to them.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), officers had launched a detailed investigation following a complaint from a retailer at the Small Business Center who had bought seven bags of ‘Ajab Wheat Flour’ from the suspect at a cost of Ksh 11,900 .
The complainant was shocked when he arrived at his shop and found that the packets of flour in the seven bags he bought were filled with sand and not wheat flour as claimed.
“The suspect has been arrested together with his assistant, Tony Molaya, 38 aged, in the Adere area, while they were in the process of filling sand in Ajab packs and bales,” NPS said.
The police have reported that a total of 240 packets of sand claimed to be flour and three bales were found during the operation.
“Two other complainants have since given further reports of buying sand in Ajab branded bales,” the police said.
The two suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to appear in court next week as investigations continue.
