As the African Cup of Nations competition is drawing to an end, all eyes are now fixed on who will walk home with the hefty prize money tagged on the competition. The final two who will face out in the final on 11th February 2024 will be hosts Ivory Coast and their neighbors Nigeria.
Nigeria fought hard against stubborn Bafana Bafana who equalized the match to take it to extra time and subsequently penalties. It is at the penalties that the Black Stars managed to book a space in the final by scoring 4 out of their 5 penalty takes while South Africa managed to score just two out of five.
Later, Congo were sent home by the hosts of this year’s edition of AFCON, Ivory Coast. They were eliminated at regular time by a single goal after going first half with a barren draw. This now sets the stage for a thrilling finale between West Africans.
Aside from the fact that the competition will offer continental glory and fame to the winners, it also comes with a big sum of money for various teams and players. After the Confederation of African Football, CAF, announced a 40% increase in the prize, teams were highly motivated to fight tooth and nail to the ultimate prize that now stands at USD 7 million for the winner.
