2 people die after an explosion at the Embakasi gas plant.

Two people were killed after an explosion at a gas plant in Embakasi, Nairobi.

Embakasi police chief Wesley Kimeto confirmed the dead as one adult and a small child, as of half past ten in the morning. He said the number may increase.

The explosion happened around midnight and videos posted on social media showed huge flames burning near apartment buildings. The Kenya Red Cross said the joint actions of various disaster response units succeeded in evacuating 271 people to different health centers in Nairobi.

So far, about 167 victims have been treated at Mama Lucy Hospital in Nairobi. This includes 142 adults and 25 children, many with smoke inhalation injuries. About seven of the seriously injured victims were transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) and 17 others to Kenyatta University Hospital. Several patients were treated and allowed to return home.

As of 12:30 am on Friday, Embakasi police said the fire had been brought under control and they were now going through the structures to check for more casualties.

“It may take time but we have experts to search the remains to see if there are victims,” he said.

Government spokesman Isaac Mwaura said gas cylinders were being filled when the fire broke out before midnight on Thursday. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, Mwaura said.

Fire and emergency services are at the scene where Kentainers Company Ltd is located, according to police. Witnesses said they felt a tremor immediately after the explosion. The Kenya Red Cross said on social media that workers had been “fighting the fire” and said 29 people had been taken to hospital with injuries.

The fire spread to several apartment buildings, leading to fears that the death toll could rise further.
